Library of ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen)

The ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen) is a globally active facility in Germany for cultural exchange, dialogue among civil societies and information on external cultural policy. As a competence center for culture and foreign policy, ifa promotes the academic and journalistic accompaniment of German foreign- and educational policy. In addition to its Stuttgart headquarters, which has been operating since 1917, ifa also maintains a branch office in Berlin. The ifa is financed by the Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany, the State of Baden-Württemberg and its state capital Stuttgart.
The library of the ifa, located in Stuttgart, is the world’s leading academic specialized library on topics of international cultural exchange. The spectrum stretches from cultural diplomacy and soft power through language policy and academic relations to intercultural communication and cultural area studies. Its collections include some 435,000 volumes and 1100 periodicals. The ifa provides an information service for the Bundestag, the Foreign Office and federal and state ministries. Yet it is also open to academics, university students and those with an interest in cultural issues. Borrowing is generally free of charge.
Besides standard lending during opening hours the ifa Library also offers many online services. It makes basic texts on foreign cultural policy available along with news on the topics of foreign cultural and education policy updated daily. This press review is supplemented by a conference and invitation calendar on international cultural exchanges.
Additional services include research consulting for university students and academics and prepared lists of new publications, bibliographies and evaluated articles on countries and regions, and topics in our Culture and Foreign Policy info-portal. We also offer bibliographies from diploma- and master’s theses as well as dissertations and an online internship guide.
Users also have access to several special collections. The ifa Library has a comprehensive collection of German-language periodicals published abroad . One highly unusual feature among purely academic libraries is the LitProm collection, which includes German translations of works of fiction supported by the German Society for Promotion of Literature from Africa, Asia and Latin America. A third special collection makes all publications of the Goethe Institute in Germany and its branch offices abroad .
The library is a participant in the Southwest German Library Association (SWB) and member of the Specialized Information Association International Relations and Asea Studies (FIV), a network of twelve independent German research institutes in the fields of international relations, foreign and security policy and regional studies.
