ZB MED – Leibniz Information Center for Life Sciences

The ZB MED (Deutsche Zentralbibliothek Medizin) – Leibniz Information Center for Life Sciences is Germany’s central service center for specialist information and research support in the life sciences. It specializes in the fields of medicine, health and health care systems, and the nutritional, environmental and agricultural sciences. ZB MED’s chief mission is to support the work of researchers and students in the life sciences. For this the ZB MED literature and specialist information in digital and printed form at its locations and through its portals, and continues to expand its services.
As a core infrastructural facility for science, research and practice the ZB MED collects and makes accessible scientific information and literature in all forms of publications. It provides its customers with this information at ZB MED’s two sites in Cologne and Bonn and online everywhere where its users are, in print and digitally. Most of our users are scientists, students and librarians as disseminators and applied practitioners, as well as public authorities.
The collections of ZB MED total 1.6 million books and periodical volumes. In addition it holds 27,500 periodical titles, of which 6,000 are acquired ongoing through subscriptions. Some 20,000 other periodical titles are available electronically, of which 9,500 are licensed exclusively within the Cologne University network. With its spectrum of subjects in the field of the life sciences, ZB MED is the biggest library of its kind in the world.
Through the search portals MEDPILOT and GREENPILOT, information and literature can be researched, read online and ordered. As linked open data, ZB MED’s catalogue information is integrated into international databases.
ZB MED has its own open access portal with German Medical Science (gms) and offers its own digital object identifier (DOI) service to permanently find papers and research data. Together with other facilities, ZB MED coordinates and maintains the open access portal Leibniz Open on behalf of the Leibniz Association.
ZB MED cooperates in multiple ways with national and international institutions, for example with the TIB (Leibniz Information Center for Science and Technology) and ZBW (German National Library of Economics) in the Leibniz Library Network for Research Information (Goportis), The United States’ National Library of Medicine and National Agricultural Library (both in Bethesda, MD), the Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (Amsterdam), the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research in (Leipzig-Halle) and partner libraries in China.
The “Germany – Land of Ideas” initiative awarded prizes in 2009 to GREENPILOT and gms in 2011 as landmarks of distinction. Also, ZB MED received the TOTAL E-QUALITY award for the second time in 2013 for successfully implementing gender equality in its staffing structure and personnel policies.
